This morning, Cornell NYC Tech announced a partnership with the U.S. Commerce Department and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
With the partnership, the U.S. Government will work directly with Cornell NYC Tech, allowing researchers and students to more quickly develop and patent their products.
Cornell University President David Skorton said the partnership is an important step in bridging the gap between the public good and the private incentives of innovation. Doing that means bringing innovators closer to the patent system.
“We need a patent office in the 21st century where ideas move at the speed of Google,” U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney said.
This is the first time an arm of the U.S. government has worked so directly with a research institution. To further the effort, the U.S. Patent and Trademark office also plans to station an employee on the campus.
“This office takes great research and transforms it into jobs and new companies,” New York Senator Charles Schumer said.
Cornell University was chosen by New York City in December 2011 to build an applied sciences school on Roosevelt Island in Manhattan. The campus is scheduled to be completed in 2037.
“Our mission at the Department of Commerce is to create an environment where U.S. businesses can thrive ,” Acting U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank said.
